Stop Googling yourself

Stop Googling yourself. Google Search Console shows your real rankings, clicks, and impressions for free. Here is how to set it up and read it.

Google your business right now. Whatever you see, that is not what your customers see. Google personalizes results by your location, your search history, and your device, so self-Googling is the least reliable rank check there is. And paid rank trackers only watch the keywords you tell them to watch, which means they miss the long tail of real queries bringing you traffic.

There is a free tool that shows your actual rankings, the real queries behind them, and how many clicks each one earns. It is Google Search Console, and if you run a website without it verified, you are flying blind.

What Search Console actually tells you

Search Console is Google's own dashboard for your site's search performance. The Performance report, found under Search results in the left navigation, is built around four metrics: total clicks (how many times users clicked through to your site), total impressions (how often your pages appeared in results), average click-through rate (clicks divided by impressions), and average position (your mean ranking across searches).

Below the chart, a table breaks it all down by query, page, country, and device. That query tab is the most valuable view in SEO. It shows the exact searches triggering impressions for your site, the average position for each, and the click-through rate. No other tool has this data. Rank trackers estimate it. Google Analytics cannot show it at all, since keyword data arrives as (not provided). Search Console data covers the past 16 months and updates daily.

How to set it up

Go to search.google.com/search-console and add your property. Choose the Domain property type and enter your root domain. This covers every variation at once: http and https, www and non-www, all subdomains. Verify ownership by adding the TXT record Google gives you to your DNS settings, which usually takes a few minutes to propagate, then click Verify.

The URL prefix option works too, verifying with an HTML file upload or meta tag, but it only covers the exact URL you enter. Domain verification keeps all your data in one property, which is what you want.

Once verified, submit your sitemap under Sitemaps in the left navigation. Then wait 24 to 72 hours for performance data to start populating. Use the URL inspection tool at the top of the page to check whether key pages are indexed and request indexing for new ones.

How to read the report

Open Performance, set the date range to the last 90 days, and click the Queries tab. Sort by impressions, highest first. You are looking for the same pattern every time: high impressions, position between 4 and 15, and a click-through rate below what that position should earn.

This is where the money is. A page with 500 monthly impressions and a 1.5 percent click-through rate earns about 7 clicks a month. Lift that click-through rate to 5 percent with a better title and meta description and it earns 25 clicks, more than triple, with zero change in ranking. Run your page through the SEO Grader first to catch the on-page basics, then rewrite the title and description to match what the searcher actually wants.

Two more habits. First, compare date ranges whenever traffic moves. A drop in clicks with steady impressions means your listing lost its appeal, not its rank. A drop in impressions means visibility itself fell. Those are different problems with different fixes. Second, check the Pages report under Indexing periodically. Pages excluded from the index cannot rank at all, and the reasons Search Console gives you, from crawl errors to accidental noindex tags, are usually fixable in minutes.

What the numbers do not tell you

Average position is an average, and averages hide variance. A query averaging position 8 might rank 3 for half your audience and 20 for the other half. Treat the direction as reliable and the exact number as approximate.

Search Console also does not break out AI Overviews or AI Mode separately in the Performance report. If an AI answer sits above your result, your click-through rate can fall while your position holds steady. When you see high positions with weak clicks, that is the first suspect.

None of this replaces judgment about which queries matter. A hundred impressions on a query from buyers beats ten thousand on a query from browsers. Sort by impressions to find opportunities, then filter by intent before you act.

Set aside thirty minutes this week. Verify the property, submit the sitemap, and find your three highest-impression queries with below-average click-through rates. Those three title rewrites are the cheapest traffic you will earn all quarter.

When was the last time you looked at what Google actually reports about your site?

Data over opinions.

How we can help

We as your partner read your Search Console data the way an analyst should: which queries deserve attention, which pages are one rewrite away from real traffic, and which drops are noise versus signal. We turn the report into a prioritized action list instead of a dashboard you never open.

And because rankings are only half the measurement story, we connect search visibility to what happens after the click, so you know which positions actually produce customers and which just produce impressions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my website's SEO rankings for free?

Verify your site in Google Search Console, then open the Performance report under Search results. It shows total clicks, total impressions, average click-through rate, and average position, broken down by query, page, country, and device. The data covers the past 16 months and updates daily.

Why should I not just Google my business to check rankings?

Google personalizes results based on your location, search history, and device, so what you see is not what a customer sees. Search Console shows the actual average position across all real searches, which is the number that matters.

What is a good average position in Google Search Console?

Positions 1 through 3 capture the majority of clicks, so an average position under 4 for your priority queries is strong. But the real opportunity is queries where you rank 4 to 15 with high impressions and low click-through rate, because small title and description improvements there can multiply traffic without any ranking change.

How long does it take for Search Console data to appear?

After verifying your property, expect 24 to 72 hours before performance data starts populating. The report then covers up to 16 months of history and refreshes daily.
